A complete guide to CSS Grid for responsive editorial layouts

Thinking in Grids

Editorial design has a long, rich history in print media. Translating that structured, grid-based aesthetic to the fluid, unpredictable nature of the web has always been a challenge. Flexbox helped, but it was CSS Grid that truly unlocked print-style editorial layouts on the web.

The secret to a great editorial layout is not just placing elements, but managing the white space around them. Using CSS Grid's minmax() function combined with fractional units (fr), you can create layouts that look meticulously crafted on a 4K monitor, but gracefully collapse into a readable column on a mobile phone.

The Holy Grail Layout

Forget the old floats and clearfix hacks. A simple grid-template-columns: repeat(12, 1fr) gives you a 12-column foundation. From there, spanning an image across 8 columns while keeping the text constrained to 4 creates an immediate sense of hierarchy and scale.
