The key to a good transition is subtlety. Users don't want to wait 2 seconds for your page to do a 360-degree flip before they can read the text. Stick to quick, elegant fades or slight Y-axis translations.
By exiting the current route with a subtle fade-out and entering the new route with a staggered fade-in, you guide the user's eye exactly where you want it to go.
